Give a gift to someone like Stacey*
Trigger warning - domestic abuse and sexual assault.
Stacey was forced onto the streets after experiencing sexual abuse as a child and then being trapped in domestically abusive relationships. She truly had nowhere else to go.
“My anxiety would go through the roof as soon as I heard him getting up in the mornings. I wasn’t allowed a phone. I couldn’t speak to anyone. I had to run away.
It was incredibly hard to leave for good. I was in and out of the women’s refuge 1,000 times but decided there wouldn’t be a 1001st time. That’s the last time I saw him.”
Sadly, the likelihood is that abuse doesn’t stop on the streets. Shockingly, more than 1 in 3 current or former rough sleepers have experienced some form of deliberate, unnecessary, and painful physical violence.
“When you’re on the street as a woman, you’re in constant danger. I would sleep near a CCTV camera for some safety. People are less likely to do anything to you.”
Stacey is still at one of our hostels, still thriving and still making progress every single day.
